Tag Implication: grin to smile

Implicating grin to smile.

Reason: Grins are a type of smile. It shouldn't be an alias, because "grin" usually describes a particularly broad smile, and may indicate an attitude that smiles don't necessarily indicate (you can have a wistful smile, for instance, but probably not a wistful grin).

It depends on what we define as a grin. If it's simply a wider smile, then the implication seems alright to me. However, if "grin" can include snarling faces like post #373038, then there shouldn't be an implication.

Yeah, I don't think that's a grin in post #373038.

I just looked through a few pages and was unable to see any clear distinction in usage between the two tags. And smile is ~26 times more common.

My inclination would be to alias them, because they aren't being used as distinct tags at the moment.

Smile is 26 times more common because a lot more things are a smile than a grin. It's only a grin if the teeth are bare, but any :)-expression is a smile, including grins.

For example, post #390838 is not a grin, but it's a smile.

So basically, I agree that grin should imply smile. I can't think of any grin that isn't a smile, but I can think of plenty smiles that aren't grins.

I support an implication, not an alias. Smile by itself doesn't quite cover things like post #162859 or post #134619.

I glanced through grin and could see hardly any posts that didn't belong. Maybe someone cleaned it up in the past hour.

Another "vote" for an implication.

Yeah, I won't disagree with you. I just felt like spurting out a random idea for a counterexample, since grin doesn't have a specific wiki definition.

Seems like everyone already has the "wide smile" defintion in mind, which is probably less confusing than a more general one.

With that said, I'm fine with an implication as well.

We're going to use teeth as the distinguishing feature? I guess that's okay, but it needs to go in the wiki. Someone write up a good explanation of the difference and update grin and smile. I'll probably implicate it after that.

Well, teeth and the amount of show-off. I mean, you'd have those slightly open smiles with a bit of white behind 'em, but then you have the quadrilateral sahpes that grins tend to be.

I'll implicate it to grin, which should also link in smile, yeah.

I'm against that implication, since evil_grin covers a range of devious-looking smiles, not just grins.

Hm I skimmed a bunch and the ones I came across all had teeth, though maybe it was just coincidence.

I'd think calling some evil_grin that don't meet the criteria for grin makes evil_grin a bit misleading... I'll undo the implication for now though.

That would be because there's no evil_smirk tag, I guess. But I thought there weren't enough exemples to make that worthy of another tag. Might do a bit of cleaning in this case.

Urgh, dammit, I thought we agreed that grins weren't necessarily smiles. post #657582 for example. This is a bad implication, no cookie for you.

post #657582 is a smile, just not a friendly smile. Smiles can be malicious, maniacal or aggressive as well as happy. I think the implication was sound.
