Tag Alias: shivering/shiver -> trembling

Aliasing shivering/shiver -> trembling.

Reason: If I'm not mistaken, shivering is trembling oneself in reaction to the cold temperatures. Am I right?

The term "shivering" doesn't just apply when you're cold. The alias is fine.

edit: oh, but I'll concede that posts tagged shivering were more likely to need the cold tag, so the information loss is still annoyting

Yeah, they are subtly different. I would have gone for an implication to trembling instead... they can mean the same thing, but they also tend to be used in slightly different situations. I guess it's not a big deal, though.

You'd think so, but I just went through the entirety of trembling -cold and only had to add it to 4 or 5 posts. trembling cold right now is only 14 posts. Even if I missed a few, we're still talking tiny numbers.

As legga noted, shivering is not just due to cold. And our wiki entry for trembling has fully included the concept of cold since its earlier form in tremble from late 2006. "A reflex motion caused by cold, fear, or excitement. a.k.a. shake, shiver." Given how few images were under trembling cold both before and after checking, your meaning wasn't in actual use either.

In short, information wasn't lost and this doesn't call for a vague distinction between two largely synonymous "reflexive shaking" tags. It just calls for adding cold where appropriate to tremble tags. And tremble where appropriate to cold.

What about a shaking -> trembling alias?

I can also foresee 'shaking' possibly being used to describe someone actively shaking an object (post #434551, maybe?), but it's probably more relevant in the shivering/trembling context.

How do you describe actively shaking then?

I'm against generalizing this too far.

It'd be along the lines of a character holding an object in his or her hands, and having visual cues (such as motion blur, or "movement lines" combined with an onion-skin effect [1]) to indicate that the object is being shaken around back and fourth rapidly.

Err, no, "how do you describe it" as in what tag do you plan to use if we aliased shaking to trembling?

I see. My mistake.

But I wasn't necessarily saying we should alias shaking to trembling - I just wanted to throw the idea out there, and also point-out that 'shaking' could be potentially amiguous if it was decided we were going to create that alias.

As far as your question, though, I'm not exactly sure. One name from the top of my head is shaking_(action), but I'm a little sketchy on that.

We can probably get away with not aliasing it and just having shaking be for shaking objects.

That's probably the best solution.

I'll be moving all applicable posts tagged with shaking to trembling, since it's the same thing. And I suppose it was worth bringing up, since we know what to do now.

I'll also create a wiki for 'shaking', so that people don't mistag with it when 'trembling' should be used instead.
