Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master. "Real Names"

Posted under General

How do we want to handle this?

BRS - Kuroi Mato
DM - Takanashi Yomi

Only use those names for the schoolgirl versions? We have some precedence for referring to a character by their real name regardless, but also precedence for naming each "persona" differently...

Any ideas?

God it would own to get rid of that stupid brs_(character) tag but I'm curious if huke's involved beyond the character designs (mostly if he actually named them) or if they're just going off on their own.

Well, he just spit out a whole bunch more character designs for it, and I would imagine that he's been pretty involved, it is his property, after all. His name is still on the copyright.

Also, some of the posts have already been tagged kokui_mato instead of kuroi_mato, I changed them, but maybe ANN got it wrong?

Edit: They've been changed back and more are added. We need an answer to this. Here's the Cast Page , anyone know?

Also, I could not get takanashi_yomi to stick as a Character tagtype.

The cast page seems to just have their name in kanji with no reading given. The difference is in the on'yomi vs. kun'yomi on 黒. FWIW, ENAMDICT seems to show "Kuroi" (as 黒井) is more of an actual surname, and none of the entries with "Kokui" there have the kanji 黒 in it.

Under other circumstances I would say that as a family name, it should be "Kuroi" for sure. The kanji is the same as the word for "black clothes" (黒衣) which is pronounced "kokui" or "kokue", though, and that's where the confusion is coming from.

I was hoping the Japanese Wikipedia would have a hiragana spelling for me, but it seems they don't at this time.

EDIT: These sources say "Kuroi":

I couldn't find any for sources for any of the other pronunciations.

It is a character tagtype. It just hasn't updated yet in the sidebar (as with the tag count).

So, Alias: kokui_mato -> kuroi_mato for sure, just so this won't come up in the future.

Yeah, since the Japanese sources seem to agree on it being "kuroi". If it ends up being something else, the alias can always be reversed.

Apparently it's a real surname from when the naming system was changed in the Meiji era.

The kanji is a combination of 小鳥 and 遊, which are combined to make the sentence 小鳥が遊ぶ, which means "small birds are playing" and apparently implies that their natural enemy, the falcon (鷹) "taka", is not present. Thus, Takanashi ("no falcon").

Now, do we want Mato and Yomi to implicate, be implicated by, or be be aliased from, dead_master and black_rock_shooter?

BRS and DM have existed for quite a while without any "real name", so I'd argue against BRS/DM -> Mato/Yomi. To me, it somehow doesn't feel right to retroactively ascribe the "new" names to earlier works.

Precedent: precure and sailor moon characters have neither aliases nor implications, in any direction -- it's all tagged manually.

Please let the names be with their BRS ova / School girl forms only.

The artist named them Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master from the start, so those are their real names, and it should stick that way. I'm not a fan of the _(character) either hee, but unless the title changes, then nothing else will do.

If they are now being fleshed out in a series, then of course their schoolmates calling them BRS and DM would be silly. But the names are anime based only.
