Panties or Pantsu?

Posted under General

I was wondering if it would not be more appropriate to reverse the tag alias so that panties -> panstu and striped_panties -> shimapan?

It seems to fit better with the content of the site or would that be too confusing to users?

I have understood that Danbooru is headed towards using English terminology where applicable. A number of tags in the style of oppai and pantsu may have been in use earlier, then replaced.

A Japanese term is to be used when it defines an object or a feature well and no exact English equivalent is known. E.g. 4koma, ahegao (fucked_silly is considered a less specific term), ahoge, buruma (different from bloomers, although ethymologically of the same origin), zettai_ryouiki, etc.

And of course there are terms specific to the Japanese culture that are English words, e.g. katana, kimono. At times, it may be difficult to tell which group a term belongs to, e.g. doujin.

Yeah, while shimapan is the word I use instinctively when talking about the iconic striped panties (hence it's an accepted entry term), we do favor English for standard words and concepts (but not series names). We'll always take it case by case though.

Anyway, Kata summed it up, read that.

They originally did used to go the other way around - I remember when the change was made. I was disappointed at the time and still use shimapan, panchira, himopan, manko and the like when tagging, but I've learned to live with it. It is fair to say that a number of those terms I ever only learned of here and that the English terms are more user-friendly to newcomers, although at the same time it doesn't hurt to learn new things and I had no problem picking them up.

It used to be pantsu, as well as many other weeaboo words used to be aliased, and it's probably not going to change back.

Just like Len won't be aliased back to Ren. (exept that Ren is actually correct.)

In your opinion.

edit: on the topic, it wouldn't hurt to have the japanese equivalent of a tag in actual kanji/kana showing next to the english tag, so people can copy/paste them into pixiv or google.
