How to protect what you upload

Reading and understanding the Terms of Service would be a good start, too.

But yes, what you're asking can generally be answered by this simple rule of thumb: Only upload good content.

Edit: It is also advisable to lurk a little before beginning to upload, as to get a feel of what is accepted content and what isn't. status:deleted is also a good way to gauge what poor content is on the site, too. Though, sometimes good posts do get deleted, for example, if they're a duplicate - but it's still generally a good indicator.

The Danbooru image search service is also very helpful in letting you check that an image you're trying to upload isn't already on the site.

I almost thought you was talking about how to protect yourself from post theft if that's even possible. I mean the title of this thread sorta implies something like that. Generally speaking it's best to follow what people had said here and to follow the examples left by people like Apollyon who been here long enough to know the ins and outs of Danbooru.

Still waiting for someone to ask questions like "When is it the best time to start uploading pictures?" or "What is the best way to go about getting my contributor rank via upload and/or non-upload means?"

Some practical advice:

Start by uploading non-explicit content. Don't worry if you get posts deleted, just look at it as a trial-and-error kind of thing. After some time lurking around, you'll be able to tell what's generally viewed as good quality art in Danbooru.

It'd be more helpful for new users if the requirements for promotion were more clearly defined though (minimum number of posts uploaded or notes made, maximum number of posts deleted, etc.)

But there is no objective, defined set of requirements (aside from $$ for priv). Something like that isn't really possible.
