unimply elf -> pointy_ears

Not everyone on the site is on the Discord and can be expected to read it. Post the reasoning here.

They want to be able to tag post #4571401 with elf, but the pointy ears implication gets in the way as the ears aren't visible in the art. user #814829 and I debated on the nature of the fantasy race tags in general and the issues surrounding them per previous discourse, with willes coming out of it believing it is fine that tags such as elf get used for art like the aformentioned post, as the character in it is canonically an elf (ala how tengu keeps getting tagged on Shameimaru Aya art).

Personally I don't see anything elf-y about post #4571401, it looks like a witch. Tags for broad fantasy archetypes should be applied visually not based on the canon of the work or character. I also disagree with tagging Aya tengu 100%of the time, though she visually does have tengu-geta, the fan, and visually matches other modern interpretations of tengu like post #7376113 post #6450908 post #4918237

If a show makes up a witch that looks like a troll then tag troll, if the character is an elf but looks like a sterotypical angel then tag angel.

Suppose this goes through, what exactly are you going off of to tag this as elf besides canon tagging? The average uploader will see a witch, not an elf, and will tag it that way if they're uploading the post with no knowledge of this character's background. On the flip side, if people should know to tag this character as elf because the wiki says so even if the post doesn't identify any elf-like characteristics, why does the same not apply for pointy ears? They're there, just hidden. To me, I feel it's either having both or none.

People who aren't deep into the fantasy rabbit hole come to know that a defining trait of elves is having pointy ears. The greater majority of our uploads related to elves will not be obscuring their ears, so removing this implication makes it an insane pain to remember to tag both. I'm not sure it's worth the inconvenience and trying to solve a faux problem for the minority of all elf posts when the implication is true and visible for the greater majority.

My two cents.

I generally agree that the examples provided look like canon tagging and there's probably a fair amount of art that should be gardened out of the elf tag. For example, while I can tell at a glance that post #9060823 depicts an elf, that's really only because I recognize that as Fantasy Warhammer elven armor. To someone unfamiliar with GW products, it's just a warrior in fancy armor and they have no reason to believe it isn't a human.
