Because the sequel to the 1993 game was DOOM II, so logically you'd call the first game DOOM I. The reboot gets a year qualifier because it eschewed that naming pattern, as reboots are wont to do.

But it isn't called that, it's called DOOM. That kind of reboot naming does often see a year qualifier for the original and the reboot, not a renaming. There is also the option of the_ultimate_doom as that's the most common version in circulation but that's ugly.

Just as an extra datapoint, the fandom wiki redirects both Doom 1993 and Doom 1 to the original game, and searching "Doom 1" does bring up the expected results, so both of these seem to be in circulation. I and 1 are pretty interchangeable when talking about titles like this (GTAV, GTA5; DOOM II, DOOM 2; etc.), so the choice is probably whichever we prefer really.

So does doomwiki.org but it was down when I went to check. The actual wiki pages don't mention it as such though. However, there is already precedent on here with the tag quake_1

I'd rather it be qualified as doom_(1993) but don't really care much either way.
