Tag Alias+Suggestion: panty_bow -> bow_panties

Posted under General

Take post #394080 as an example.

Users would probably find it easier to search for the tag "panty_bow" if it was aliased to bow_panties. And frankly, I think the tag name "bow_panties" is slightly obtuse, so it's not exactly the easiest tag to guess or search for if you've never heard of it.

Or, I would also suggest possibly just changing "bow_panties" to "panty_bow" all-together. Consider this:

If "bow_panties" was replaced with "panty_bow", it would probably be easier to remember/use, since it suggests panties with a bow on it, rather than a type of panties (with a bow on it). If it was changed, it'd be more in lieu with hair_bow as well, which in turn suggests someone's hair with a bow in it (and if you think about it, the ribbon equivalent of "bow_panties" for hair would be "ribbon_hair" - which of course, wouldn't make much sense at all.)

Thanks for reading. Any thoughts on this?

Compound nouns in english are always a type of the second term in the compound. A hair bow is a bow that is worn in the hair, bow panties are panties with a bow on them.

A panty bow would be a bow worn on the panties? I don't think that fits what we are trying to tag here, we want to be tagging the panties themselves, not the tiny bows on them. I second NWF Renim.

Huh? I disagree. The bow is what we're tagging, not the panties. And it's not a defining characteristic, just a particular visual element (unlike, say, "striped" or "frills" or "side-tie"). So I don't think Shinjidude's argument is too convincing.

I don't see how panties with a bow on them are any different than panties that have stripes on them. Striped_panties is a tag that has been established forever.

With hair_bow I'd count the bow as a separate entity since it is a physically removable object separate from the hair. With bow_panties, the bow is part of the panties and can't be removed without damaging them. There, I'd say the article of clothing the bow is part of takes precedence over the component.

Maybe I'd understand your argument better if you explained why bows are different than stripes or frills.

Actually, I think I was totally wrong about it; I agree with your point that it should stay as bow_panties. So, I guess the point of argument is totally moot now.

And since panty_bow has already been aliased to bow_panties (which seems to be a reasonable compromise), there's really nothing to discuss here now.

Either way, I'm happy with the results.
