bass, bass guitar, double bass, etc

Posted under General

I was going to propose the alias bass guitar -> bass, but have also seen a couple of double basses being tagged as bass. Technically, "bass" could also refer to bass horns, or low-pitched members of other instrument families.

Should we:

1. mark bass as ambiguous, and sort posts into bass guitar and double bass, or

2. remove double basses from bass and proceed with an alias bass guitar -> bass (or vice versa, to avoid ambiguity?)

I'd suggest we start using the full tags as the primary name, and optionally implicate both to bass.

Agree on using full tags.

However, I'd be hesitant to implicate both bass_guitar and double_bass to bass -- because the former far outnumbers the latter, people end up using bass where they should be using bass_guitar. (Similar to posts being tagged cover without more specific cover_page or other *_cover.)

Marking bass as ambiguous (with links to the full tags in the wiki) and leaving it empty would hopefully alert users to the full tags.

Alternatively, alias bass -> bass_guitar, and people tagging double_bass adjust accordingly.

Bumping this again.

I've added bass_guitar to relevant tags so we can use a less ambiguous name for it, removed guitar where appropriate so we can use the two mutually exclusively. I also removed bass from all the double_basses that had it.

While doing this I changed my mind about the implication, and agree with r0d3n7z that we ought to just alias bass to bass_guitar since that was the common tag in the past.

I've also written wiki entries for guitar and bass_guitar with details on how to distinguish them. Something weird happened there though, and I ended up creating a General:base_guitar as well as a base_guitar article. I'd like to delete the one without the type, since it doesn't link to the posts, but don't have permission (I thought Janitors did). Anyway if someone could delete that too, I'd appreciate it.

Did the alias. Have no problem with the implication, but will see if anyone has any objections first since it'd have to be reversed manually, which would suck given that there are probably a number of images that legitimately have both.

Personally, I will just ID a guitar by shape, I won't sit down and count the strings.

If someone's volunteering to babysit the guitar tag, though, I'm fine with the two being separate tags.
