Various complaints re: mobile browsing

Posted under Bugs & Features

  • When viewing posts, swiping right goes back. The sensitivity for this is way too high, it engages regularly when I'm trying to scroll down.
  • In search results, forum threads and pools indexes, you can only move one page at a time. This is a particular issue on the forums since important threads can be hundreds of pages long and new posts appear at the end.
  • tall images in pool indexes are all screwed up. They overflow other images and may cover the next page button at the bottom.
  • Zoom and left-right scroll is disabled when viewing posts. The first is problematic with large annotated images, since the notes end up tiny. The second is problematic because scrolling down can still shift the view left or right if swiping at a slight angle.
  • It seems to be impossible to select and thus copy text on a post page. Parenting posts or copying notes requires trying to remember the post number.
  • Note pop-ups get a boost to text size, but the pop-up size and location is not clamped to screen size. As a result, large notes or notes that use "white-space: nowrap" end up cut off, usually on the left.
  • (minor) Note boxes are slightly but noticeably offset upwards from where they should be.

All of these are on Android using mobile Firefox.

This is an issue I have encountered as well in Chrome for Android. Chrome has an option to force zoom enablement, but horizontal scrolling is still disabled, which makes zooming in on details extra tricky, since pinch-zoom is far from precise.

Disabling responsive mode seems to restore zoom and scrolling functionally, but also causes pages to load with very small text and thumbnails for a vertical 5.5" screen (sizes look okay on the same screen turned horizontal, but the device is harder to hold this way).

The zoom issue might be eased (if not actually resolved) by moving the tag list below the image for mobile viewers, or maybe into a pop-out drawer on a narrow left sidebar, so that images could fill the width of the screen by default instead of being constrained by the tag block.

Disable swipe gestures in your user settings (My Account >> Settings >> Advanced). I was encountering similar problems, and that pretty much fixed it.

There's a link to the last page on the forum index.

Not on Android Chrome. Also, you might want to check out your custom CSS. Many/most problems can usually be traced to that.

This is a hard problem because nobody uses standardized size or style formatting with notes, and text size isn't adjusted according to image size.

There does seem to be a strange situation with the cropped thumbnails. I've switched them off, but when I turn my device horizontal, they come back, without even reloading the page.

Not on my Android Chrome. If you have custom CSS, it might be caused by that. It could also be some kind of image caching going on...? I'm not sure without being able to replicate the problem myself.

These issues should be fixed now.

Tags on bottom is the default unless you've disabled responsive mode. The pop-out drawer idea is probably what we'll move to eventually.
