Set of aliases coming out of discussion from topic #15296.

the purpose is to remove ambiguity from these tags which are frequently wrongly tagged for non-linguistic cultural associations. The aliases will clear things up and also formalize usage the way commentary is used, i.e, Portuguese commentary.

There was a suggestion to similarly formalize the use of country flags as well, which should probably be done and an alias could be included here.

Also on the topic, English's wiki mentions that only when done correctly. I think that's completely unnecessary. How well English is rendered does not change whether or not its English, just including the tag engrish tells us if it's done poorly. For that reason I'm including implications for engrish/jerman.

There shouldn't even be a jerman tag. Those kind of tags were already done away with many years ago in topic #6023 in favor of standardizing the (language) + ranguage combination. It's probably best to treat English consistently in that regard so that users won't think the direction to tag "only when done correctly" applies to other languages too.

jerman used to be gelman, which as EB said, we specifically got rid of in topic #6023. I'll just move it to german + ranguage manually.

engrish -> english is probably more debatable than the rest. It was discussed before in topic #7268 / topic #7263. The argument back then was that you'd have to search english -engrish to find correct English. But right now you have to search ~english ~engrish to find everything with any kind of English text, which I think is worse. So +1 to that, and the rest.

I've made some changes, please check the actual request.

Might want to throw in wu_chinese -> shanghainese_text in there as well

Included now

edit: removed jerman bit

Also there are some endangered languages included, I would suggest maybe a tag for these minority languages not often in use to make them more likely to be translated by an expert.

Updated

  • Shanghaiese is only one instance of the many examples of the Wu languages, thus it would be incorrect to create an alias that point Wu into Shanghaiese.
  • Wu/Shanghaiese as a language is not generally being written, so it would be incorrect to have a tag named "shanghaiese text" when most instance with such label will probably be images where Wu expressions would appear in dialogue bubbles.
  • Other existing language tags: Cantonese, Sichuanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, bopomofo
  • updated czech_text typo and another not pointed out
  • removed wu aliases and added the languages mentioned by c933103.
  • added maylay_text

Also, I think we could include fictional and dead languages to this. If someone is aware of such tags, please make a BUR request in this thread.

We also have the Ainu tag, which is described as "for something pertaining to the Ainu people or when there is use of the Ainu language." I have no hope this will be a useful tag unless there's an expert in the community that can sort through this.

changed.

I believe the request here is more or less finished. I feel it can be approved as-is.

I don't feel too strongly about the national flag situation but if someone wants to work on that go ahead. There's a lot that could be done, especially considering regional, fictional, provincial, historical and internal flags, and alternatives.

Updated

In the case of video with sound/audible speech this could either be handled by either changing the aliases here from _text to _(language) or creating new language_audio tags. I am in favor of using the latter rather than using the same tag to indicate both verbal and textual language. Credit goes to Provence for bringing this issue on on discord. Any thoughts?
