[New Feature] Artist Dead URL Links

Posted under Bugs & Features

With the recent deployment of issue #3716, marking artist URL links as dead is now possible. Take a look at artist #48811 as an example I just did.

To mark an URL as inactive, in the edit box all you have to do is precede the link with a hypen "-".

In the HTML view, the links show up with preceding hyphens. In the JSON/XML views, the URLs have a new field called is_active to denote this.

I like the new feature, but I see a few improvements which could make it even better:

  • I think that the links should be unclickable text, and have strikethroughs. The artist detection already does it this way, and I like how easy it is to see at a glance which links are active, compared to the way the artist page currently looks.
  • On the artist edit page, a help text should be added below the URL field to explain the feature for people who don't see this thread. Something like "Place a '-' in front of dead URLs."
  • Using Firefox, clicking on the dead links on the artist page leads to a Danbooru "not found" message, because it directs to, for example, https://danbooru.donmai.us/-http://ymst-shnblog.tumblr.com. (This would be automatically fixed if the links became unclickable.)

Other than that, it works great! I'm glad there's now a way to show which links are dead without relying on the artist's wiki page (which may or may not exist), and I like that artist detection still works on the dead URLs.

Created issue #3725 for the above.

The fix for issue #3725 has been deployed.

However, I have noticed an issue with trying to reactivate dead artist links, i.e. removing the hyphen prefix. For some reason it's not saving the change and leaves them as dead, but I found a way around this by completely removing the link and then saving it, and then readding the link without the prefix and then saving again.

I've filed issue #3731 for that problem.

Would there be a point in mass-updating Twitpic URLs, and/or other dead hosting sites?

I've been slowly working through these. I could do the Twitpic's all in one go, but I want to minimize the number of artist versions I create, so I'm fully processing each artist entry which takes more time and requires the occasional manual review.

If there's a reason to expedite this process, I could delete all of the dead URLs in one go. Besides Twitpic, I've noted over a dozen other sites that are dead dead.
