Religious tags

Posted under General

So apparently my cleaning of some of the religious tags such as Muslim and Christianity caused some outrage.
My intention was only to remove the tags where it was not expressively clear from the image that the religions where relevant. All women that wears a hijab arent necessarily Muslims. Especially in Iran and Saudi Arabia where not wearing one is illegal.

I propose that we only tag Muslim or Christianity where the religions are mentioned in the images or artist commentary. Middle eastern clothing or crosses should really not be enough to warrant an additional tag. I also propose we change the Muslim tag to Islam for sake of consistency.

Also Is Ana (overwatch) really wearing a hijab and not just a hood?

Problem I have here is the artist's intentions are clearly "this is a Muslim woman drawn in anime style/situations".
That is the whole point (joke?) of the image, so to remove the tag is incorrect.

I'd lean more towards an implication from muslim -> Islam here.
Possibly also an implication from niqab -> hijab

Yeah that's a tricky one since she wears it very loose.

This seems reasonable, but I'm open to using religious tags for images with obvious religious themes even if they aren't explicitly "mentioned". A man praying with prayer beads and a Buddhist priest's robes (post #1060100) is pretty unambiguously religious. Same goes for a depiction of a Hindu god floating above a Hindu temple (post #2844825).

I also propose we change the Muslim tag to Islam for sake of consistency.

It's strange that we have tags for buddhism, christianity, hinduism, shinto, and taoism, yet Islam and Judaism are tagged muslim and jewish. +1

How can you tell, anyway? Without taking into account any background knowledge about the character, is it possible to distinguish a hijab based on appearances alone? Unless it's apparent that the character isn't just wearing an ordinary hood or head scarf, I don't see the need for using the tag with religious connotations.

Can you link the specific image in question? I can understand tagging muslim if a character is shown practicing their religion (e.g. praying/standing in a mosque/holding a Quran) but not just for wearing religion-specific outfits. We don't use the christianity tag for every character dressed as a nun or priest.

As it has been described to me by some Kurdish and Persian friends of mine a hijab is a scarf that covers the head and neck of the wearer. Thus if we take post #2282742 as and example the third and fourth woman (and technically the first) are wearing a hijab while the second and the last one isnt (counting from the left).
