Commonly misused tags

Regarding the solo tag, does it count if there's only one character but there are non-character animals present as well? For example, on post #2902749 I left out the solo tag as there is a bat present.

The solo tag is fine in those pictures as long as it's not a copyrighted/original "animal" or a creature like a pokemon, or if the animal's not the focus of the picture. Bats/birds like that don't count towards the character count.

Got it, thanks.

Non-humanoids should never count towards xboys/xgirls, but I'm not sure if we have a rule on whether specifically-named creatures disqualifies a post from solo or not. I haven't been sure but tend to leave "solo" off in cases like that (post #1508003) That would be something to discuss if we haven't yet.

There does seem a good deal of uncertainty on this.

For instance a search for "shimakaze_(kantai_collection) rensouhou-chan 1girl -cosplay -1boy -multiple_boys solo" returns 64 pages, whereas "shimakaze_(kantai_collection) rensouhou-chan 1girl -cosplay -1boy -multiple_boys -solo" returns 65 pages. Almost a perfect 50:50 split.

Since he(?) is a character, has a tag and can move on his own I've been removing the solo tag from posts with only him and Shimakaze, same with Rensouhou-kun with Amatsukaze and Nishikitaitei-chan with Akitsushima.

artist_request

This tags gets often added to posts that already have a source. Don't add this tag when you get this from a 1st party source (i.e. from the artist#s pixiv etc.).
Instead use topic #8199 and ask there and if you then get a name one should reate an artist page: howto:artist.

<soapbox>
There should really be two artist request tags. The original for genuine requests, and then a modified i'm_too_lazy_to_properly_tag_this_artist for pictures with first-party sources like Chiera said. To those that say that determining a proper artist name can be hard, well I say that I would much rather prefer even a generic artist identifier like pixiv125552, seiga5523, etc. that can always be changed at a later time rather than nothing at all. At least then all future uploads for that first party source will be collated under one tag instead of having to be somehow found and collected together after the fact.
</soapbox>

  • Hair is quite possibly the single most misused tag of all. It's hard to find examples of this tag being used correctly among all the posts where it doesn't belong.
  • Tied up is a mess as there are numerous uploaders who insist on using it in conjunction with bondage even though it is expressly not meant for this purpose.
  • Straw continues to be used even after multiple purges and the transformation of its wiki into a disambiguation page.

Are there examples of black wings that are neither feathered nor demon/bat wings? Saying they have to be feathered seems like it could be too restrictive when you could just add feathered wings on top of it.

There's post #2659289, for one. Imposing a restriction like this on a color tag seems unnecessary to me as well.
