Tumblr sources (also bookmarklet-related)

Posted under General

I think it's still possible to download raw sources from Tumblr, just very inconvenient. I don't think it's intended so it might be fixed, but with the upcoming ban on adult content I figured it's now or never. If you export a blog you run (Blog Settings -> Export) then you get seemingly full size images even from reblogs; I've received 20MB PNGs and JPGs from this export. I last tested this on Nov 24 as all my blogs are 10+GB and I'm on mobile currently. If there are any Tumblr artists who don't post to a proper art sharing site like Pixiv this may be useful.

This may or may not be related considering the possibility of a migration, but can you post uncensored art there if your IP originates outside of Japan or you can prove you don't live in Japan?

Interesting announcement from Tumblr:

"On December 17, 2018, our Community Guidelines will change and adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr."

Hopefully artists migrate to Pixiv instead of Twitter, the image compression and browsing is terrible on Twitter.

You mean on Tumblr? I've seen uncen art there since forever, so yes.
If you mean Pixiv, I've also seen western artists censor their (otherwise uncen) stuff for Pixiv uploads.

I meant Pixiv. Forgot to mention. I just wanted to clarify considering how complicated the law can be when applied to websites. I asked this because Tumblr used to be a great site to post and share uncensored art and now people don't have any other option besides Twitter. And Pawoo is not really an option due to their pretty bad image size limits.

Many artists will post a censored to pixiv or similar, then have uncensored versions on gumroad, paetron or mega.

Incidentally, tumblr is currently flagging everything as mature content and hiding it. When they un-flag something that is clearly not meant to be, it will appear as a new post in your timeline (if you are monitoring it like I do).

Uncensored art behind paywalls. Tumblr really is ruining erotic art.

If it's any consolation, this is basically the final nail in the coffin of tumblr, with no porn, there really isn't a reason to be on tumblr anymore.

By outright banning Adult/NSFW content, Tumblr is effectively pushing away the majority of their userbase to other sites (read: competitors) like Newgrounds, Pixiv, Twitter, etc. while killing off one of the few reasons to ever actually browse the site. Good job, Tumblr Staff. This might actually be the single dumbest action I've seen from a social networking site.

At least the artists that were posting there are already migrating towards other sites to post their artwork on and we have less non-raw Tumblr images to settle for.

Yep, Tumblr is hanging itself due ot incompetence. I hate Twitter with a burning passion because finding art is hellish when you have to scroll through tons of food photos and retweets, but everyone's migrating there so this is life now I guess. Newgrounds is good, but I get the feeling artists will prefer Twitter because it's easier to get views and popularity through retweets.

I've heard stories of Tumblr's shoddy coding before so hearing about a bunch of SFW drawings and pictures get flagged doesn't surprise me.

Still, it's seems like they're making the same mistake Livejournal did years ago and it's pretty obvious they don't understand their own userbase (people across the whole userbase are angry) or their own actual problems and that they're trying to appease Apple.

Anyway, I guess we should keep our eyes open to see where people go.

People are either moving to newground(!!!!!) or to twitter. Unfortunately the bulk of them is moving to the latter, which means garbage compression.

Not very much difference after tumblr did away with _raws.

Pixiv specify they follow Japanese law on their ToS

Actually, for tumblr's policy update, the policy site now say, the ban against "adult content" mean
1. "Don't upload images, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples —this includes content that is so photorealistic that it could be mistaken for featuring real-life humans".
2. "Don’t upload any content, including images, videos, GIFs, or illustrations, that depicts sex acts."

So they are banning content that are considered "explicit" on danbooru but content classified as "questionable" on danbooru seems to be mostly okay, as long as they're drawing - unless the artist choose to use a realistic art style.

Either way, expect Tumblr to be less used as a resource to upload images from than even DeviantArt in the upcoming months. Like, removing RAWs is one thing but this is a whole other ballfield.

I'm just pissed that there are less places to find uncensored versions of people's art, much less popular places that people are more likely to use.
