[REJECTED] Tag implication: hair_down -> alternate_hairstyle

Posted under Tags

create implication hair_down -> alternate_hairstyle

Link to implication

"A character who would normally have an up hairdo now has it down. Also used on hair growth that is used for a character whose original design sported short hair."

The last part is also covered, since alternate_hair_lengtg implies alternate hairstyle

Personally I'm fairly indifferent to whether or not this goes ahead. I was just posting that for reference.

But the crux of the issue comes down to:
- Should hairstyles that exist in the canon of the copyright but are not the usual one associated with the character be tagged with alternate hairstyle or not? alternate_hairstyle screencap and similar combinations do show examples that have been tagged as such, but there are also plenty that haven't.
- Should characters who change their hairstyle at some point in a story be tagged with hair up/hair down? What about with alternate hairstyle? Does it matter if one way is proportionately more common than the other, bearing in mind that this can change over time for franchises with new material coming out?
- Should you leave out the hair up or hair down tags from characters that do not particularly have a hairstyle that they are associated with, perhaps because they change their hairstyle frequently?
This discussion has come up several times, and every time something along the lines of these questions has been brought up not properly resolved. Whatever the outcome of this thread, this wants resolving and the wikis to be updated as appropriate.

Couldn't this mostly be solved with a hairstyle tag for straight down hair? Every other hair style has a tag and can be searched for, but straight down can't be searched for. Currently hair_down is for characters whose hair is normally in a style, and subtracting all other hair styles removes a lot of posts where someone does have their hair straight down; that, and you'd still get a large number of posts with untagged styles.

Either have a tag for unstyled hair or treat hair_down as a style, not a condition, and use alternate_hairstyle where appropriate.

I was going to bring my point from my post back up, actually. If some kind of unbundled/style/etc hair tag is added, that would then cover all existing hair styles (since it's currently treated as the null style and is unsearchable). The combination of hair_down (or some other name) and alternate_hairstyle would suffice in the majority of posts that use the current definition of hair_down, to which then the current definition of it becomes obsolete.

straight_hair, as you said, can't be used as it describes the type of hair, not the style.

Not sure how useful of an opinion this is, but I'm with EB on this; if I'm searching a character and alternate hairstyle, I want to see every post where that character does not have their default hairstyle, no matter what said hairstyle is.

If you do decide we need a tag for straight down hair, something like unstyled hair might be better at getting the point across without having to read the wiki (which many people won't do before tagging).
