New theme pool: simple shading

Posted under General

I do not see any existing pool that covers this theme. It could be considered the opposite of pool #3574 - Expert Shading (though it is not really intended to be a value judgement like "expert").

pool #10135 - Simple Shading.

I just had the idea so I only have a couple posts from a single artist, but I think they demonstrate the point well. I have seen similar posts before but never seen them cataloged as such. Please let me know what you think, or if there is a problem with this pool idea.

Flat coloring doesn't involve any kind of shading at all. I think he meant simple but effective shading, not using a lot of colors or filling in a lot of areas but it gets the point across in a nice manner. I can't think of any good examples at the moment though. Hatching is another example of simple shading.

You're going to need to find dozens more pictures with a consistent visual example amongst them to justify this. What other posts do you have in mind? I do think flat_color is a better example and it could probably be better explained with a tag. The point of expert shading as a pool is its demonstration of extremely refined technique. I'm pretty sure you could find thousands of images that are "simple" to begin with, which waters down the value of this as a pool, but gives a tagging more justification.

Eh, flat color seems to cover what you're thinking of, unless I'm misunderstanding something.

I didn't know about that tag. It is a similar idea but not the same as what I have described.

Actually, it's backwards; flat_color includes pictures with simple shading, usually two tone, as long as the shading is drawn as a solid color. "Unshaded" may be a more descriptive name. It is not quite the same since it also includes simple gradients that do not resemble photorealistic shading.

I forgot that shading can also include ones not from color. I thinking along the lines of lineart colored in with the MSPaint bucket tool.

Yes, that is what I meant in the pool description: "especially color fills closely following the line art".
