Long, overgrown sidelocks. Very conspicuous when ears are showing. Can be pulled behind ears or tied back, making them much less apparent. A given haircut can emphasize or hide them, but 'payot' is not a haircut per se (it is used like 'bangs'.) The term is of Hebrew origin.
