Real: any kind of weapon that fires projectiles by way of explosive propellant. (This therefore excludes bows/arrows, crossbows, slingshots, peashooters etc.). A railgun, even though it doesn't use explosive propellent, is also a type of gun.
Fictional: energy weapons, e.g. laser, phaser, plasma, disruptor etc. etc. ray guns are one example.
