The Mitsubishi A6M Zero (三菱 零式艦上戦闘機) was the primary carrier-based fighter aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. At the time of its introduction it was the best craft of its type, featuring a very potent and eficient engine that gave the craft high maneuverability and speed as well as a very long range of operation.
It took a number of years before American tactics and engineering were able to meet its challenge. The Zero's only flaws were a lack of armor in the pilot's cockpit as well as excessive high speeds during dives, which made them vulnerable to slower and more maneuverable enemy aircraft.
