Really, all of the arms forts were too easy to beat once you got a good idea of anti-AF tactics. As a matter of fact, I just recently beat Sol Dios Orbit with a tank design, soaked around 150 direct hits, and came out with 95% health.
Kojima cannons are energy weapons. Energy weapons do no damage at really long range. Sol Dios cannons do zero damage at range 1750, while good sniper cannons still do ~1500.

If you hit Sol Dios twice with blades before the orbs take off, it's possible to get a perfect score on that mission.

Only works on Hard Mode. On Normal, the orbs take off before you get there. I suppose it's to offset the fact that you're facing six SD cannons rather than four.
