Didn't break mine and I've seen some fairly skinny people handle it as well - without a flinch. It's far from comfortable, but nowhere near wrist-breaking.

M249 is still far from a general purpose machine gun (missing roughly 2000J on each shot), firing it from the hip hardly requires anything more than being able to lift ~10 kg of mass to your hip and pulling the trigger. Being only able to hit the broad size of a barn stops being an issue in case the target is actually bigger than the broad size of a barn.
10 kg is actually heavier than you think. Then you have consider the continuous recoil of weapon that shoots 1000 rounds per minute. A fourteen year old girl couldn't handle that without having serious arm pains when she wakes up next day. Like I said: ITS MAGIC
