Actually, B&W has some parts that feel a bit more mature. Or at least surprisingly depressing for a childrens game. NPCs ask you if they will ever get used to their monotonous and depressing lives, your rivals question why they want to be the very best (like no one ever was) and there's quite a lot of innuendo that just has to be intentional.
The Yellow arc in the Pokemon Special Manga diffenetly started getting serious without going the whole "dark and emo" thing. As long as the games dont overdue the dark aspects, then it can only get better for older audiences.
A Pokemon game that shared vibes like Madoka would be refreshing
