I'm uncertain of Patchouli's dialog in panel 2. It makes sense grammatically, but contextually, it seems...off. I'm hoping someone can help it make a bit more sense.
Kamaki said: Marisa: Bet you really found some treasure, huh? Patchouli: I'm not you, you're such a child. Patchouli: I'm just me, and I always will be.
Sounds a bit more fluid, and has context, but I'm no translator.
Ah, that was it, thanks. I can't see the forest for the trees sometimes when I'm doing this stuff.

I dunno about that. He is on a whole different level than your usual doujin artist.
He can create drama without resorting to crappy cliche or letting the Touhous act out of character. He can create genuine comedy. Not just silly puns, memes or old jokes written anew. And he can create the most heartwarming scenes I have ever seen.

Say what? Kaara established his own fanon just like every other doujin artists. Some artist may steer closer to canon than others. But Kaara is not one of them. If your going to make a Canon/Fanon argument, Kaara is clearly on the Fanon side. Just like HappyFlameTime, Coloel Aki,Pageratta and etc, etc. What he does do though is not stray away from his established fanon though. So his fanon touhou doesnt act out of character within his own Gensokyou.
Tetsamaru said: stray away from his established fanon
That's what I meant here. I wasn't making a canon/fanon argument. The characters in his doujins are his own. You wouldn't be able to pull off his sense of comedy with the canon personalities, that's a given.
You reacted pretty strongly. Don't like Kaaragetarou? Did you think I was making a argument like "He is closer to canon so his works are better."? I don't think like that. But I dislike everything which strays from general established fanon and canon both. Over these years many doujin artist have created a common thread through fanon that is general personalities and behaviour for the Touhou girls. When someone grossly violates these and canon both, that's when a story looses it's appeal as Touhou fan work completely.
A good example would be gensoukoumuten's stuff. I feel like everything is off. It's just not Touhou. But it's nevertheless awesome without a doubt. I just think that he should make his original stuff rather than pasting in some elements from Touhou.

I do like Kaara. And thats exactly what i thought you were saying. So misunderstanding has been fixed.

So much for justifying why I like what I like.
We'll have to Agree to disagree on that. Do you feel "Happy Flame Time" is also "Doesnt feel right"? Mystia X Mokou wouldn't have taken off with its popularity without mitsumoto helping the scene. Everyone is free to establish their own fanon. And i'm all for some people trying something different than the norm. For instance, Child Daiyousei is the most common Daiyousei while Adult Daiyousei is very niche. And before Momiji's canon personality was shown, anyone who ever shown Momiji not being a "Hnnnnnngggg" character was either called "Nice and original" or "How dare you potray my cute Momiji like that!?"
Before a "Common" fanon is established, someone has to start it before people roll with it. I cant remember which artist did it(I read my fair share of touhou doujins) but one hilarious take i seen on Hina was that she was a total "Curse" addict, acting like a drug addict that constantly needed his fix. And little miss creepy/stalker/emo Hatate was started up by 1 person before it became "Normal". Which is a complete contrast to her canon personality just like "Common" fanon Momiji. P.S. This is not an attack on you. Just making conversation.
To me one of the main elements of Touhou's popularity is that the fanon has expanded far more than the canon but there are conflicts when one prefers canon (I dislike creepy Hatate but like child Daiyousei) to fanon or vice versa. And I don't think something should be measured
But I don't think that anything should be measured to how much it measures to canon since part of the joy is seeing the same basic archetype (or sometimes the archetype for the character is completely reversed) in many, many different lights. Vice versa, it shouldn't be measured to how much it strays from canon, either. Touhou, for one reason or another, fits in just about everything without being reduced into a "moeness" style in every case.
One thing related to this is how far the yukkuri fandom has moved from touhou into its own thing. Regardless of what you think of it, it was certainly a interesting way for that all whole thing to progress from an ASCII-art face to the current semi-plant living heads they are now.

Heh, I can't counter that. I won't throw around with useless arguments and try to convince you. It's not even like a disagree...
Actually, this "This isn't Touhou." feeling comes up more often in serious doujins than, let's say that doujin about chibi Hina terrorizing Touhous. I would just think of the latter as a crack comedy and enjoy it. Those are part of the fanon. I guess the genre plays a role here. I'm fine with both Momiji versions and with mitsumoto's stuff, too, or rather, I'm a fan. Maybe the reason I'm so strict with the former is that I simply like the relaxed atmosphere Gensokyo is depicted so often with. Remember the scenes after you beat the game and the music playing in the background? That's how Gensokyo feels like for me. The slice of life doujins, the original manga by Zun. All these build up Touhou for me. Great changes in the setting/atmosphere paired up with different personalities like in Battle Royale or some Tohonifun doujins are what irks me. There is also this "Lovely Dream" I raged a few hours ago over for instance. It felt so unnatural for the world and characters Zun and general fanon created.
I'm probably not making any sense anymore...it just seems like I'm a "canonfag" who dislikes forcefully inserted drama in his Touhou. My eyes are heavy and writing what I mean is a pain now. Good night for now, I just wanted to answer before going to bed.

Actually, I dont like Battle Royale either, not because its a serious doujin. But because there wasnt any ryhme or reason to it other than just a doujin to show some cool fights.
And as for the "Slice of Life" kinda thing. I actually have the same exact view for Dating sims/Visual novels. Sometimes i would pop in a very "Sugar and candy pops" kind of story like Snow Sakura or Festa Hyper girls Pop. Then when I'm actually ready for something with alot more meat in it, i'd play something like Fate Stay Night or Tears to Tiera.
So as far as Touhou Doujins go between the 2 of us. You like your Touhous in a nice calm or Crack atmoshphere while I like to sprinkle in some "Why so Serious?" stories into mine. You probably wouldnt like my doujins as they are on the serious serious side.
So Patchy, let us drink for our good health and happiness.
It's not like that at all!Wha?I'm not you....this old man's gonna get hammered! On such a lovely day as this...You're such a child.I'm just me.I was just thinkin' that somethin' about your atmosphere's changed...Oh, come on!Bet you really found some treasure, huh?And I always will be.I see. Now, now....you have a glass too, Marisa. With a beauty like you servin' bar...ENDThank you for enjoying the read.
