Battletech 'Warhammer' stole the designs from Macross and even marketed toys using their design. In Macross this particular model was called the Tomahawk.
They were not. FASA even had to stop using their Macross-based designs because it made them vulnerable to lawsuits--in short, they appropriated them from Macross. Even the current Battletech creators are having to struggle with FASA's long-ago chicanery:
Robotech came from three different series; Macross (1st Gen), Southern Cross (2nd Gen) and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Battletech ripped off both Macross and Battletech for a few of their mechs. The Tomahawk, the Spartan, the ADR anti-aircraft destroid and the Phalanx all come to mind. The ONLY reason half the people bought Battletech was because FASA put the Tomahawk on the front of the box. Anybody who had any knowledge at the time bought Battletech SOLELY for that reason.

Thank GOD for the internecks... I used to be just a Robotech fan... now I'm more of a Macross fan these days... ;)

No. They actually got explicit permission from the studios in Japan to use those designs for the Tabletop game Battletech. Said studios even altered said designs slightly for Battletech use. Then about the same time Harmony Gold USA Incorporated bought the rights to Macross, Mospaeda, etc. to mash together an "anime" for western viewers now known as Robotech.
However, even though FASA got permission from the studio, they didn't do so through the proper routes so in the end Harmony Gold USA sued FASA, FASA stops using the mechs, and replaced them with what's mostly considered to be inferior designs.
Right now Harmony Gold USA hasn't really made anything new from the Robotech franchise and has pretty much just sat on the IP for who knows how long. They recently sued video game studio Smith and Tinker for using a mech that KINDA looked like a Tomahawk (looks completely different) in their recent Mechwarrior 5 video game trailer indefinitely delaying the game despite the displeasure of thousands of fans.
Oh, and the reason you don't see very many Macross kits or shows coming over Stateside is because toymakers and anime localization companies are too scared of Harmony Gold USA freaking out and sueing their ass for selling kits of "Robotech" mechs or any mech from Macross that they've put a claim on.
Really, if Harmony Gold USA were to go bankrupt and let go of the IP, the world of entertainment would be a lot better off right now regardless of how "awesome" the frankenstein-ian Robotech series is.

Ever think it was because the game as well as the narrative which could possibly even earn you a college degree was good? It's been almost 4 decades since the game's debut and there are still tons of people who play it.

Actually, Battletech had some nice designs, obviously inspired by Miyatake and Kawamori's work on Macross, but still good enough for me liking the Battletech universe. The Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) is a personal favorite of mine. It looks kinda like a human version of the Zentradi Glaug from Macross (which was designed by Kawamori).
