Yeah like the HM03 aka Surf. You're telling me that my [insert water type Pokemon here] doesn't know how to swim and needs a CD in order to do so. Then it seemingly can't carry me across some river, lake, and/or ocean until I get some flimsy badge from some stranger.
I can swallow that a Pokemon might need special training to ferry a person safely across the sea, or fly them from location to location. I'm less convinced they need a special move to cut down a tree or break a crumbly looking rock.

But Surf is actually useful in battle. Fly, Waterfall & Dive as well.
Then again, starting with gen 4 it's becomes a pain especially with surf & fly. I need a water-type who has a decent Sp Atk stat & then a Flyer with Atk stat that makes use of...Fly. I don't like using legendaries or ubers so that cuts out 99% of who I want on my team & basically it comes out to Charizard or Staraptor...
Gen 5 really needs to switch it up. Every Pokemon automatically knows HM moves from now on, but for them to be used for battle you have to teach it to them & it takes up a slot. No longer will I have to carry around a Tropius (HM slave) for Cut when I have Charizard instead who knows it by heart, but no slots wasted on such a horrible move.

You misunderstood my comment. You need to have a certain badge and a device that teachs your mighty Pokemon how to swim before it can carry you across water. Now think about all those huge Water type Pokemon within the game and you have to ask yourself "Why the fuck do I ever have to do this?"

I never stray from the main path to the E4 much so badges or lack of them doesn't bother me much. But I still see your point, Wailord is a fat lazy bastard until I show him scout boy/girl badge.

It's the best-known obstacle, though.

I dunno about the badge stuff, but I think most pokémon know how to swim/fly/dive/whatever in the first place. The HM allows the pokémon to compensate for the trainer grabbing on and hitching a ride. At least, that's a guess I read somewhere.
