The execution device in this pic is a Spanish Garrote. Basically, the pole is used to tighten the restraining device around the neck until the windpipe of the criminal was crushed. Particularly gruesome.
This device to the best of my knowledge was used in the James Bond films The World Is Not Enough (most recent usage of device), The Living Daylights, and From Russia with Love.
Wow, Nitori being executed by Garrote Vil... That thing was used as an execution device until death penalty was abolished in Spain, back in 1978.
One note of correction, however. The device was not made to crush the windpipe, but rather, to break the spine at C2-C1 level. The trauma of this wound causes an immediate brain coma and death follows quickly. But in order for this kind of injury to happen, the victim must have a frail neck and the executioner must be very strong physically. Otherwise, an unnecessary agony, like Nitori's in this picture, is pretty much guaranteed. In some extreme cases, death may not come until after 30 minutes of horrifying pain. All in all, not a good piece of history from my country. I'm happy that death penalty was abolished. ^^;
Ahegao is the Japanese name for this expression in which your eyes roll up towards the sockets and your tongue is hanging out of your mouth. It's quite popular in pictures that show someone either being fucked silly or being strangled to death. In the case of this picture, it is most certainly the second.
