The Japanese name is phoneticized "gengaa" (ゲンガー) actually. The "ge" part has more of a long "a" sound. Hence Bulbapedia's "Gangar" romanization
I think Bruce_ofthe_lees was going for a short "a" sound as seen in Ganondorf's name.
Funny thing I noticed: It takes 2 gameboy cartridges to trade and get a Gengar. It takes 2 gameboy cartridges (Oracle of Seasons + Oracle of Ages) to unlock and fight Ganon.
