Some help identifying the kanji in 強化(?)水生地 please? It looks like 扌 + 癶 + 弓 + 殳 but I can't find it anywhere.

撥?

It is 撥, as Sillily mentioned, and 撥水 means water-repellent.

So does Kourin get any compensation for his awe-inspiring efforts beyond "not getting torn into little tiny fleshy pieces by the three most powerful people around"?

Thanks, my word processor displays 撥 very differently for some reason so I couldn't find it to look it up. My kanji-fu isn't as strong, you see.

What's with their hats?

The hats are probably just artistic liscence. I love it when artist put their own spin on character designs. It really makes you tell that they drew it.
