People say that it was the "cruelest thing" that the Americans dropped two nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities, killing tens of thousands of Japanese civilians.
...but if the Americans went instead with the first option of actual, amphibious assaults on the Japanese home islands.. it was projected that MILLIONS of American troops would be killed or wounded and it was probably that TENS OF MILLIONS of Japanese civilians would have perished as well, from the Americans attacked street by street, town by town... and millions of Japanese, even the elderly and school children were conscripted into make-shift militias to fight the "American Invader" to the bitter end. The American high command was so convinced of the high casualty rate, that they printed thousands of Purple Hearts that were never used in account of Japan instead surrendered after the nukes were used (those medals are still being used today by the American military as they are still using up that WWII Purple Heart stock)
Luckily for Japan, the American occupation of the nation was kind, as shown here with this American G.I., giving a piece of chocolate to this young Japanese girl. And the Japanese economy grew exponentially with American funds and investment.

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is still a tragedy that killed many civilians, the fact an invasion may have cost more lives, does not detract from that fact. There is also the possibility a new diplomatic approach may have ended the war, but we will never know how likely or unlikely that would have been, now that the time has come and gone. Many agree with your point of view, that it was a necessary evil to break the Japanese will to fight to last man, causing the least amount of deaths, but perhaps some other way could have been possible, we simply will never know, other than come up with good hypotheses.
As much as I agree that while being a sad move that caused a lot of deaths and suffering, it was a necessary move, is Danbooru really the right place for that kind of stuff? I can't speak for everyone, of course, but I come here for anime titties and adorable catgirls, not to be reminded that the world can be a cruel place where you can do no wrong and still die because your governement went to war.

Art comes in many variations. Danbooru is art gallery first and 'anime titties/adorable catgirls pictures dumpsite' second. It would be strange if many variations of guro art and/or rape/domestic violence can stay here but a reminder of the humanity's ugly side cannot, and the comments should also follow that rule.

Of course, the use of nuclear weaponry is horrid and MUST be condemned, I agree. However, given the circumstances presented before U.S. President Truman, he had an option to end the war sooner and with less potential loss of life - both American and Japanese- by using the new weapons instead of a ground invasion.
Strategically, the nuclear bombs also made Japan surrender shortly after the Soviets declared war on Japan and began conquering Japanese territory on the Asian mainland and in the northern Pacific islands. If Japan had not surrendered sooner, it is likely she would have been divided much like how Korea was, and Germany: a "communist Japanese" and an "Allied Powers Japanese" portion.

Danbooru is an art gallery that covers ALL themes of life. To be honest, I made my unitial comment not really to start a conversation on the goods and bads of nucelar weapons and how cruel war can be... but I was mostly commenting on what I remembered when I looked onto this image from @mossacannibalis . It is a wonderful image, in my humble opinion, because it shows the kindness of an American soldier giving a young Japanese child a piece of candy... a rather touching moment to reflect on, after the conclusion of a world war that ended millions of innocent lives and is rhe most horrid war on the highest order.
My thought was, "if the Americans actually did a ground invasion rather than dropling the nukes, this girl might not be given chocolate from this G.I. ... instead she wpuld habe been charging him with her maleshift bamboo spear". ...this is a morbid thought, you might agree... but I wonder if the author was trying to envoke this thoight when he drew this image? Maybe I am wrong... but perhaps I am right?
