Never underestimate imprinting. AKA this whole fiasco started when people hatched endangered crane eggs and let them saw humans, meaning they 'imprinted' the human form as their own species. Since cranes doesn't have the intellegence to recognize their own reflected image (aka Mirror Test) they ultimately thought they could mate with humans.

There's also Futaba, a shoebill who's very fond of her caretaker. Though it maybe because shoebills are generally friendly creature, despite the menacing look.
