Note to all: Though the Type 89 grenade discharger is nicked named the "knee mortar" it was actually a bad idea to rest it's base on your knee. The recoil was actually quite high and therefor had a tendency to break the firer's knee.

Additionally: The name came from American soldiers who found discarded ones on the battlefield and made a logical but wrong assumption about what that curved baseplate was for. It's actually meant to be braced against the ground, a log, or (in a pinch, if using in a field-expedient direct-fire role) a tree.
(I can only assume there was at least one GI who picked one up, tried to use it the way he assumed it should be used, and got himself a very unpleasant surprise.)
Nowadays mortar such as this is becoming more gimmicky for military especially the French army.
