most likely the "hng" phenomenon. Danbooru has a policy for 4chan pop culture quite equivocal to the christians policies of the spanish inquisition. Best to forget about it, deal with it, and keep the Danbooru gods happy.

I think I never saw the comment thread, but it's anything like other comment threads, it probably involved a single somewhat-funny reaction, brought, stomped and thoroughly ground to the ground via endless repetition. Then the mods got sick of it and nuked it from orbit.

One mod, many mods, mods are mods and part of what qualifies them for the job is to be able to police the place without calling for a conclave every time. Otherwise no policing would actually get done.

And yeah, a comment-locking mechanism would be quite good.

Oddly enough the effect of the "*head explodes*" chain has been felt outside of Danbooru. Yes, we started a meme.

Its a meme. Somebody made a random joke that made no sense but was simply cartoon slapstick hyperbole ("this is so adorable my brain cannot handle the cuteness and explodes from overload"), someone copies, someone else copies, cascade of mimics starts, BAM, instant meme.

Also piles of brains all over the floor, but that's not nearly as fun to analyze.
