Back when they filmed the original "Top Gun" (I was still in elementary school then) you might have actually been able to drag race an F-14 taking off, but these days when you are on a US military base, there are probably more police cars and less crime per square mile than anywhere else. That means lots of bored base police!
The speed limit rarely goes above 40 MPH at most bases I have been on, except Edwards AFB, where there are long stretches of desert between the building complexes. Also these days they are sticklers for motorcycle safety; I have to ensure any people in my unit who ride motorcycles are current on their safety courses and stuff. They will pull over motorcyclists on base if the riders aren't wearing their helmets and yellow reflective gear. So much for the "good old days" I guess, but on the other hand it is a super pain for the entire command if someone gets killed or seriously injured in a crash.
