This does make me wonder. I know in the US there is the tradition (and I assume in most other countries) of formally informing the family of the deceased. In the case of World war 2, when the allies were actively fighting the axis, did the allies take on some of the informing or was it left to the country of origin?

I would assume if they knew and were passing through the area individuals would probably try
