Good technique, but that's what the plugsuit might look like if you told some roundeye to draw a sexy tight-fitting suit for a science-fiction setting. Even with all that skin showing, it doesn't even come close to Gainax's original design. Gainax is superior. ALL HAIL.
(BTW, this reminded me of the plans for a live-action EVA that surfaced a while ago... we really dodged a bullet there. I still shudder at the thought.)
Protip: you don't have to watch every shitty adaptation that comes out. I've been using this technique with great success for years; one could even say I'm an expert at not watching shitty adaptations (and sequels, it's a multipurpose tool, y'see).

I wouldn't say it's a particularly western design. Compare it with Barnette's outfit from Vandread (post #140681, post #188478). It's not too different from this.
Of course in the same show you've got Meia who is more or less "Rei 2.0, Tsundere flavor", and wears more or less the same plugsuit as Rei does in Evangelion (post #140700).
