Considering the majority of hits on Gambier Bay were from heavy cruisers and that Suzuya and Kumano were out in front (hence the latter got hit by torpedoes from USS Johnston), there is some historical bullying going on here.

Well... Kumano and Suzuya were taken out of the battle right from the outset with Suzuya later being sunk by airstrikes and Kumano suffering a thousand years of pain in one month so this may be a bit of a coping mechanism for the two.
