To be fair, a notification will pop up to inform you on the update and you can reschedule the updates. Doesn't make it less annoying.
Well, I once had it decide to restart itself just because. It pops up an "There's [something something] update. Will restart in X seconds." So if you are out of the pc the moment that happens, it's gone.
Update fail to install or it just doesn't work even after update?
It doesn't work to a point far enough to fail an update. Opening the Windows Update panel in Win7 SP1 tells me the service isn't running when it is. Trying to manually install anything relying on Windows Update throws 0x80000247. I've been battling this for over a year across three reinstalls. Even my plea for help on SysNative received no replies.
I'm seeing lots of suggestions to bring mac-like reboot session saving to Windows 10, so auto reboots from os updates in the future may not be as disruptive.

Oh, I know that feeling. About 3 weeks ago my laptop's HDD died so I had to call someone to check it and repair it and it was until a week ago that I got it back, my info couldn't be rescued so I had to get a new HDD... since then I haven't been able to install neither the SP1 nor DirectX... I already did everything Microsoft Support suggests and it keeps giving me the same error message...
There were some changes to Windows Update at some point that screwed up Win7. You can find the instructions on how to fix it on this reddit post .
I could not install any kind of update from Microsoft including those downloaded manually due to an error and couldn't change any option related to Windows Update as it believed (incorrectly) that the service was not running.
On Christmas I decided to use up all the luck hanging around in the air to finally do my last-ditch clean-install with the update rollup slipstreamed into the disk image. Assuming nothing shits the bed in the next week, I'm about 95% sure the SATA drivers for this computer were undoing the fix in SP1 that allowed Windows Update to not freak out at the sight of an Advanced Format hard drive. Whatever generic ones Windows pulled from the ether are working fine so far.
