It's an already well-established fact from Summer 2016 that shipgirls are the real bad ones in this game, so I won't even bother making trivial comments on this.
Btw, could I just change the tag to "hime"? Because, that is the standard way to call Abyssal Princesses in Danbooru.
is there a version where Black is the one that goes down first?
No, it seems it's goes with the historical record. iirc I-13 is sunk before she can reach Truk, meanwhile I-14 is manage to reach Truk, maybe that's why the white one is depicted as dying in battle, while the black one is crying and angry over her friend fate.

New interpretation which synthesizes with the "Abyssals = the dark side of the ship girls' previous lives".
When I-13 died, I-14 made a literal "deal with the devil" to bring her back. And thus the loss of one has damned them both. Defeating the Abyssal Twin Princesses will set them free from their Cursed Duality.
I think the Devs are enforcing the concept of Duality on this event. It shows on the boss that we're fighting and who we get to save.

Now you just made me want to save both of them.
It would be sad, you saved I-14 but not get 1-13. She would keep asking "where's my sis" while the "I didn't get a drop, x is myth mindset kicks in".
