Part of a trio of Swedish Sverige-class coastal defence ships, Gustav V, then named after the king of Sweden, formed the core of a potent fleet-in-being, well suited for the Baltic sea. Combining her 11.1 inch guns, escorts and Swedish Naval Doctrine the Svenska marinen were considered too troublesome to handle and were a factor in Sweden's capability in maintaining neutrality.
