In fact, the destroyer which rescued Killer Kane was USS Terry (DD-513).
The destroyer —it was the Terry — had already picked up two other pilots that night. One was Comdr. “Killer” Kane of Air Group 10, from the Enterprise. This was his second rescue within a few days. His F6F had been shot down near Saipan, but he had been retrieved in time for the attack on the fleet. Coming back, he was in the landing-circle, making a time-turn on instruments at what he thought was a safe altitude when salt spray splashed into his cockpit, and his plane ploughed under.
