I don't follow the series at all, but somehow the more I look at it the more it feels like almost all original cast have been washed away. The tags never indicate if it's about a different Girls und Panzer either. Is it something like Love Live Sunshine (same universe, different cast) or are they totally unrelated spin-offs?

This image shows some of the leaders of the various teams. It is all the same universe. The original cast are still the main characters, it's just that the other side characters (who have like less than a minute screen time) have gotten their own fanbases. Kind of like Kancolle. Bucky is the MC, but everyone probably knows Kongou or Shimakaze better.
When you search for GuP, you can easily see the following listing of characters on the side listed by post count. The main characters are non-bolded, and the characters from different schools are bolded. There are no other characters from the main school (Ooarai) that make it to the top 10.
Darjeeling won over many fans early with her eccentric behavior. Most of the early comedy works featured her, although Rosehip has supplanted her in this role since she was introduced.
However, Anchovy was the real surprise. She had an interesting design and was shown early on in the season, but when she finally had her episode, she only got several seconds of air time, even though the episode was titled "Next is Anzio". This created a vacuum of user demand, where fanartists were given free reign to interpret her character, much like what has happened with Touhou. When the OVA finally came around, they knocked it out of the park with her character, and she became an instant fan favorite, and I'm sure she'll pull ahead of Darjeeling in a couple of months.
As the MC's sister, Maho's position is no surprise.
As one of the initial foils, plus her rough demeanor that many have interpreted to be the Tsun of her Tsundere, Erika's position is also not a surprise.
Katyusha also wins a lot of support with her eccentric behavior, though not as much as Darjeeling.
Isn't it simply because she is a loli with tank? To add on, Arisu gains her popularity because of her emotionless prodigy girl status (replacing Maho, as she turns out to be more emotional than she lets on), her badass display of tankery and she is also a foil and rival to Miho, both from a rivaling family with long history in tankery.
Of course, she currently has less posts on here, but that was because she is a new character.
That makes sense. All my "official" knowledge about Girls und Panzer are two chapters of the first anime season, so I found strange artists are drawing anything other than the main cast to the point I though they didn't exist in the current plot anymore. Being also the leaders of their teams, that also explains why they are drawn so often. I guess I should look around for the official manga... or at least check the anime and OVA available. Thank you for the feedback.
Interesting... others have noted similar impressions of before (post #2317821) and after (post #2317823) watching the show. Gotta love the fanon... it really flanderizes the heck out of these characters.
I think that part of Darjeeling's appeal is that she is a very competent commander and doesn't get a egotistical about it. She's honest and respectful even to her opponents. Her quirky aspects help to keep her from becoming a flat character. I'm part of that segment of people who don't go for the tsundere types so much!
