I never understood popularity of that character, it's just a GENERIC trainer and those hardly got any fanart (esp. before gen 3). Now I was told it's due to her being like "Tharja", or more obviously - Tomoko. How is that sorta eyes style even called? I often see it in "nerdy" characters, like the Umino from Sērāmūn, Dr. Akihabara from the "banned" (never screened outside) episode of the Pocket Monsters, VERY common "trope".

I think it's more due to Tomoko, due to this image and the fact the anime came out in the same year as the Hex Maniac new design was revealed. From the tags, those sort of eyes are called Al Bhed Eyes.
