While it's the Puchi committing the act and not the person, it looks like becoming an Abyssal did nothing to curb Akagi's appetite.
I find it odd that people assume that shipgirls become the abyssals, rather than the other way around. (There was another line like this back the last time Warusame appeared...) That is, abyssals are the girls that "died twice".
I tend to look at it as the characters are vengeful ghosts of warships with horrible pasts that get purified into cheerful shipgirls... So recruitment is the second rebirth.

How does that line up with the Western playerbase's hopes for getting Allied ships? The worst a lot of them got was standard scrapping which seems to be treated as a Good End by shipgirl standards.
I am under the impression that the Abyssals appeared first, because the kanmusu are specifically "created" to combat them.
Of course, it's possible that further Abyssals are created by modifying sank kanmusu. On the other side, It's also possible that humans reverse-engineered defeated Abyssals to create kanmusu.

Or maybe like some fan work, kanmusu just pop up from nowhere and already have all the knowledge to defeat Abyssal.

It lines up just as well as player's hopes of getting Yukikaze, Ushio, Hibiki, Houshou, Myoukou, Haruna, and several other ships that were scrapped.
I tend to look at it more like Tsukomogami, but with less charge-up time. The act of being inhabited, itself, gave them spirits, although the war gave them the negative spirits that became abyssals. Characters like Miyuki don't get abyssal versions, because they didn't have the stain of war on their spirits, and just go straight to shipgirl.

I'd argue that getting scrapped after becoming spoils of war is on the opposite end of the spectrum from being scrapped by the home team or an affiliate, with actual combat sinking being somewhere in the middle.

Haruna, Myoukou, and Houshou were all scrapped by the Japanese. So were Kitakami and Jun'You, and maybe a couple others that were sunk in shallow waters like Haruna was. (Plus, there's Prinz, Nagato, and Sakawa getting the ultimate explosion ending, I-401, I-58, Takao, and some others being target practice, which are both other categories from war sinking, as well...)
I think the point is, they were period-appropriate, and crewed long enough to have a "war spirit" embodied within them.
