Shigure was the only survivor of Battle of Vella Gulf, they were on a transport mission to Kolombangara when they got ambushed by an American fleet consisting of six American destroyers. The engagement sunk Hagikaze, Arashi and Kawakaze with 1,210 men lost. It was also reported that Shigure was struck by a torpedo but it happened to be a dud which gave her the opportunity to escape.
This is probably another survivor guilt for Shigure.

Forget 'reported' when they finally dry docked the ship for overhaul some months later there as a 21 inch hole straight through the rudder.
Battle was also interesting because it's one of only a few I know of where a detailed first hand narrative of higher level officers involved on both sides is readily available. The US version being found in "South Pacific Destroyer" and coming from the XO of the USS Maury.
