I like the artstyle, but....I'm not sure. It feels like she's gone from being a laid-back, but energetic girl to being battle obsessed in how she looks. :/ Again, the art's good, no doubt about it...just doesn't feel like Kako to me.
Talk about Art Evolution. I still can't believe that she's drawn by the same person. (lol)
Actually, if you look at his other non-kancolle art, especially by upload date to when he was told to draw this. It's not really an "Improvement".
It's more like he probably held back or was given a certain parameter to draw when told to draw a "profile pic" for her.
Some people suck at drawing backgrounds and like to draw whole scenes. Others are only good at drawing profile pics. Ugume seems to like drawing actual scenes so profile pics was proabably in an area he didn't have alot of practice with. Thus the original was more of a Downgrade of his skill. Rather than this pic being an "Upgrade". He was always this good basically.
Hmmmm....I really loved Kako and her robotic bits on her arm. She looked so cool and unique, having an arm cannon like gun turrets in the original. This one...just looks a bit too different.
I like that he drew better and all that but it feels just a bit...too much. That and no more robotic arm turrets. It makes me feel a bit sad. Like I'm not even looking at Kako anymore. It's like if Shibafu suddenly drawing his girls exactly like the anime versions, to the point where you won't even recognize it's by him. It just feels wrong.
But the artwork is still great. Overwhelming, but great.
Before Kai2, she was a first year middle-schooler with minimal fashion sense and care for her outlook appearance, then after Kai2, she's now in third year of high school and starting to be self-conscious of her image.
The art isn't really BETTER, per se, it's just that it's far more dynamic. (Look at the way the neckerchief is drawn in both images - they're basically drawn the same.)

Dude, a profile pic won't somehow make his shadowing, coloring and detail work worse. There's very obvious improvements. Look at her hair, the skirt (it now looks like actual cloth instead of super stiff), the wrappings, even the subtle detail on the abs.

Actually, that's exactly what I was saying that proves there aren't improvements. Look at the shirt, arms, and neckerchief. Even the skirt had more gradient shading in it in the original.
It's simply the stiffness of the pose and how the cloth was positioned that make it stick out as so awkward.
Basically, the detail work is largely the same, (only the wood paneling really sticks out as more detailed,) it's just the composition that changed... which says a lot about the subconscious effect of good composition.

If I had to take a guess, the artists at the start didnt try their very best since it was probably just your average web based game, nobody saw coming the sudden popularity, so they had a 2nd chance with kai nis/art updates to show their skills.

My thoughts too exactly.
Though I guess I'd share a bit of disappointment since she kinda looked like Kiso...
Really late for this but I just realized that Kako's and Furutaka's K2s mirror each other perfectly in terms of gun layout.
Furutaka has 2 turrets on her right arm and 1 on her left shoulder (well, off her left shoulder) while Kako now has 2 turrets on her left shoulder and 1 on her right arm. Torpedoes on opposite legs too.
On a morbid note, they now both have searchlights... but has anyone thought that the longer side of Kako's hair might hide an empty or sealed up socket?

Another thing is that they both have this wing emblem, Furutaka on her upper arm rigging and Kako on the casing on her right thigh.
