Considering what happened to them IS an infinite loop of life and death, I'm not sure that translation is entirely correct. Could that sentence means the reverse instead?

No, in this one they build up resistance to what kills them. Otherwise the previous pages would have been of Mokou appearing at her last save point, burning up, and repeat. They are in a finite loop of death, followed by eternal life when they've become immune to everything.
Can't they try to become Buddha ? They are already free from cycle of death and rebirth. They just need to look for a way to be free of desire and suffering.
Isn't she ALSO removed from the cycle of reincarnation, and happens to live in a different plane of existence (with some of the dead)? Couldn't they just hang out at Hakugyoukuro?

Not even Death can withstand the cosmic might of the Nature. If you see it clearly, the Gensokyo already become a scorching desert. It's possible that Hakugyokurou and the others are wiped out of the existence.
Plus, as forever-living beings, maybe they simply can't be in the realm of the dead? They're like the very opposite of the afterlife.
From what I recall, this is basically the truth. They can't even ENTER Hakugyoukuro, because to enter it you become "dead". As Hourai Immortals they simply can't become dead.

Hakugyokurou isn't part of Gensokyo, and it's a spiritual realm.
Besides, Yuyuko also can't properly die.

That would have had implications on the multiple times Reimu (or, for that matter, Youmu and Yuyuko,) traveled to the various places like the Sanzu no Kawa, Hakugyoukuro, various hells, or met Tenshi.
In fact, they mention how they're not supposed to be able to cross over in spite of being dead or alive, but keep doing it anyway, which tends to fluster the likes of Youmu.
And in any event, Shiki Eiki, Komachi, and Yuyuko are clearly beyond death, explicitly outside the wheel of reincarnation, and capable of traveling the world (or other worlds) if they so choose. The clear implication here is that "everyone is dead", when the idea that Yuyuko or Shiki Eiki are dead and buried are kind of bizarre...
Ultimately, "death" in Gensokyo seems more like Dr. Who's Timey-Wimey ball. It mostly runs on "Shut up, it runs like this because I said it runs like this, and stop using logic on my bullshit!"

It's part of it, really. Hakugyokurou is still inside the Gensokyo's barrier. The concept "spiritual" here is because there are no living (normal) humans that can enter and exit from here easily, that's why it gains "spiritual" trait.
There's a slight difference between "death" and "wiped out of existence"
The Yama's and anything "Spiritual" are dead in the same way that even the gods "die", they simply cease to exists. You think there would have been a "heaven or Hell" for Kanako or Suwako? Gods cease to exists if there are no worshippers.
I'd imagine that's what happens in this doujin. Nature died, Fairies died with it and so on. Everything ceases to exists.

Hakugyokurou isn't part of Gensokyo. There's merely a gate to Hakugyokurou that is in Gensokyo. Just like there is access to heaven, several hells, and the Sanzu no Kawa, which wouldn't be a very meaningful border between life and death if it only existed in one physical place.

Fairies dying with the nature that supports them is perfectly in line (although one would expect fire/lava fairies...) however, Yuyuko is explicitly removed from the cycle of life and death, just like Kaguya is. Further, the entities in Hakugyokurou are in a different stage of the cycle of life and death, and the loss of the the Earth wouldn't stop them from being in that state.
Again, Touhou has a multiverse with populated planets and realms of existence with living creatures besides just the Earth. Shinki's realm is filled with living creature (makaijin, but living creatures capable of dying and being reborn, and thus, there's still existence of Shiki Eiki, as well). Yumemi and Chiyuri are also from other planets, and the Lunarians probably wouldn't have just sat around waiting to die for 2 billion years, either.

They're still inside the Great Hakurei Barrier. But whatever, there is no point to debating a fandom though.

If i am to remember right isn't the so call heaven and hell inside Gensokyo ? as well , like Hell is the underground were the onis live as well and Heaven the skys of Gensokyo . True don't bother arguing with the fandome exp were there is overblown and god-modding , just like in this comic.
