Honestly, I think it's only sensible. When a person views not-so-human creatures as humans/humanoid, the feeling that they and us are of the same kind is rising. That makes us sympathy with them humanoids. After a bunch of images featuring mermaids (or fish personificated as humanoids) being eaten, I cannot look at the fresh fish in the same perspective as before.
