tengu is written as "天狗" in Kanji in both Japan and China, "天" means sky or celestial, and "狗" means dog. So there are way lots of pics in which Momiji looks like a real dog

That's just artists believing that all canids behave exactly like dogs. Momiji is a white wolf, her official profile says as much.

If you want to split hairs, the original "天狗" was more like a fox. Which sort of reinforces CinderBH's point that most authors/artist think that all canids are the same, really.
