I wouldn't go so far as to call KC a "Touhou killer". I love the game and never really a big fan of the Touhou series. But Touhou is held as several mention something like a religion that it's hard to uproot.
And i know of certain websites that will chew your head out just for even saying you don't like it. Then again same can be said for most media =P.
It's symbolic! Kancolle will usurp Touhou as the next Comiket-dominating mega-franchise! IT'S OVER TOUHOU IS FINISHED!
More curious about how Kuroko no Basket is the second rank after Touhou. Never seen much of it and there's other fujoshi catering shonen series that's even been running longer.
But maybe I'm just hanging out with different crowd
becouse fanboyism, headcanon, fanon, otakus, weeaboos and the idea of cults for shitty games like touhou without at least an 8th as much love going to other people's masterpieces that took lots of more effort, money and time to make like halo instead of said shitty games...that's why.

I'm sorry but I'm just so fucking sick of people giving all their love to games like this but then give no love to other games like halo or assassin's creed or metal gear solid or hell even super mario, legends of zelda, final fantasy, sonic the hedgehog and a whole bunch of other games that are WAAAAAAAYYYY more better then this stupid excuse of a fucking game...I know I'm being savage but someone has to say it...this series is getting way too much love...and I just can not understand it for the life of me....there are a billion other things out there that are better then touhou...and yet, touhou gets way more love then them...not only is it more popular and has a bigger fanbase then nearly every other game ever...the popularity and fanbase trumps nearly every anime & manga series as well...I mean look at the amount of touhou content that is on this site alone....imagine the millions and millions of other shit that are on the internet that aren't here...it's fucking ridiculous...I just don't understand why there's so much love for this one series...I mean the games are shit...SHIT?...SHIT!...what is the main plot of the story?...what is the game's moral?...WHERE IS THE STORY!?!?!?...and most of all...where is all of the stuff between the boss battles???...it just goes from boss to boss...what's the fucking point in playing a game...that has no fucking context...I, DO NOT, GET IT...its just a game that has just been slapped together...so why is there so much love for it...is it becouse the creator said to the fans that they could go nuts with its canon?...which is extremely unstable by the way thanks to the fandom...well guess what...he's not the only creator of a series who's told his fans to go nuts with his own series...there's loads of others...so again, why has touhou, among all of them, been selected to stand atop the pedestal of fanboys, otakus, weeaboos and hell even great artists and just average gamers...why???...I don't get it...someone...please...EXPLAIN????????? >XD

i can say to you what i think why but.. it's my own opinion tho..
i think it's because of how the characters are portrayed by fans as Cute only because it's all little girls playing paintball(because honestly the game sprites aren't that good..) and with what you just said there is not much story in the game itself(unlike the other/most games which has established stories already) because the game only story is how the player meet other characters and what is their attitude and what kind of youkai they are(in short, the game is only introduction to the new characters) and the only real story of this series is in the manga WaHH, FB, and the other 2 or 3 i forgot the titles(which is like pretty much just a story of what kinds of folklore there are in gensokyo and how to deal with them), that is why the fans is pretty much can make their own story for the characters.. and that is why fans are always at all time high in this series because they are more free to play with the characters in their heads which is, i think, the biggest selling point of touhou to the fans.. yes there is not much of a lesson or story behind the game but it let's the player/fans imagine how will all of them interact with each other..
and because of that this games story is pretty much being dictated by the fans, or should i say the fans make up the game for it is pretty much only alive because of the million of the fans even tho it's only like a doujin game..
this is only a review of what a 3rd party person see in touhou and it's fans (here i refer to myself as 3rd party person for i don't love nor hate the game and literally haven't played any touhou games)
not only is it more popular and has a bigger fanbase then nearly every other game ever...
I can assure you this statement is false.
And I'll explain the reason behind its popularity when I figure out how every seemingly unsignificant things can become meme and why cat videos are so damn popular.

dude.. is there any other fanbase bigger than this?

Mario, Pokemon, Metal Gear, etc etc Kancolle is only popular among anime communities, even then, it is still obscure to plenty people in anime community that think the same as Super Dick (you sir, have a great naming sense), where they think they are weird.

no, what i meant was, is there a bigger fan community that touhou? because honestly even tho in the past i had nothing to do with it, it's like the whole internet is always showing it to me more that other anime/games..

Well, Touhou definitely have a ridiculously huge fanbase. But once again, they isn't well known outside of anime communities. However, while it is not globally know to other communities, they do spread everywhere (I blame 4chan), even people who isn't anime fan will at least seen it once, without knowing where its from. I would say Touhou fanbase is as huge, if not larger, than Mario fanbase.

you say all that but yet, as you said at the beginning of the comment, its your opinion on why people love it...it's what you think...so everything that you just said might not be the real reason why people love it so much...but it's quite a good idea nonetheless...but the thing is, is that other games also have this "the characters are whatever you imagine them to be" vibe, but yet they're not as popular and the fanbase is nowhere near as big either soooo...???

check how much fan art there is of Mario, Pokemon & Metal Gear compared to touhou...you'll find that on this site alone, touhou has more fan art then all of those series combined.

well you asked, and if ya go and ask everyone, you will pretty much get different answers to your question..
nope.. the other games are kinda limited on what their story are in their respective games for their games story already have a established beginning and how it will end.. unlike this kinda game which just gives ya characters and their info... read some touhou doujins here and you might see what i mean..

that's funny isn't it?...how the fanbase of a game that has been around for nearly 60 years can be trumped by another fanbase of a game that has only been around for nearly 20 years -_-

I'm not talking about games like halo...I'm talking about games that are similar to touhou like undertale...touhou is in the same basket as all of these low budget games but yet is infinitely more popular then the rest...why is that?
I'm not talking about games like halo...I'm talking about games that are similar to touhou like undertale...touhou is in the same basket as all of these low budget games but yet is infinitely more popular then the rest...why is that?
like i said.. touhou is like a character introducing game only.. it doesn't have much of a story even tho it's only a bullet hell game or because it's a bullet hell game(sometimes it's also a fighting game and that is the canon touhou) that it doesn't have much of a story.. every canon game of touhou is only the main heroine solving 1little incident while introducing new characters w/c is what i think the fans like to fantasize about in their stories unlike example undertale(even tho i hadn't played it yet i saw youtube players finishing the story of the game) w/c have a established story line, players knew how it ended..
you know some of the fans of touhou hadn't even played the game yet(my base on this is that in some of the touhou videos on youtube a little percentage on those comments were people wishing they knew how to Download the game while saying they are fans of the characters themselves), and this is probably because of how the other fans portray each of the characters in their doujin stories in which pique their interest into the game.... the fans themselves are like the advertisement of the game for other people..

As a touhou fan the selling point of the games are the characters and how most of the story is left up to interpretation. Anyway the point I'm trying to make is that touhou is an open canvas that breeds a good environment for fanfiction, doujin, and art not many games can offer the same.

Exactly.. That was the point i was trying to point put but you point it out better than me... Guess i need more practice on how to convey things..

but isn't that the same for any other person who comes across a bit a gameplay from a certain game...I didn't know anything about street fighter until someone introduced it me to it in 2008...and it became one of my favorite games...but I didn't start playing the game until 2013...so what's the difference there?
like i said.. touhou is like a character introducing game only.. it doesn't have much of a story even tho it's only a bullet hell game or because it's a bullet hell game(sometimes it's also a fighting game and that is the canon touhou) that it doesn't have much of a story.. every canon game of touhou is only the main heroine solving 1little incident while introducing new characters w/c is what i think the fans like to fantasize about in their stories unlike example undertale(even tho i hadn't played it yet i saw youtube players finishing the story of the game) w/c have a established story line, players knew how it ended..
even though your point stands about the differences between touhou and undertale...ever since undertale first came out its fanbase has been skyrocketing...why?...becouse of the characters in the game, the story, and the creativity of the game's universe...the characters have great personalities which makes them relatable in many ways...the fact that the mechanics & options of the game are acknowledged by the characters within the story is very interesting...and the story is just very emotional...undertale might become the next touhou and for a good reason...I mean look at all of the fan comics ...its unique...compare it to touhou, a series that only introduces characters for the fans to use and abuse with their fantasies...yes, that's also unique in its own way....but that doesn't excuse the fact that it's too popular and the fact that it's fanbase is huge nor does it explain it...why?...becouse it's not as unique as undertale is.

At this point I think you might be trolling, your questions have been answered and yet you ignore the answers so I'll just reiterate in a TL;DR list.
1.Touhou has a massive world with a flexible setting 2.Zun(creator) encourages fan works and interpretations 3. Undertale is great game but calling it the next touhou is kinda reaching 4. Touhou has a huge cast of characters with flexible stories 5. Touhou is no longer just a game it's a culture 6. It's cute (well now it is) 7. Music

well that idea is flawed becouse there's undertale...it has a plot, it has an emotional story, it has characters that you can relate with...everything that most games have in them today...but yet there's a ton of fan comics being drawn about undertale on a daily basis...it's quickly becoming very popular...and, as I said before, it might very well become the next touhou, even though it's nothing like touhou and is instead a very normal game.

dude.. are you ignoring what we are pointing out or what? like we said, for the fans, it's not about the game but on how they can freely interpret/play with the oh so many characters in touhou..

my questions have been answered...that is all...that does not mean the answers are true or are valid as proper reasons as to why a shitty game gets so much love.
1.Touhou has a massive world with a flexible setting loads of other games have this yet they're not as popular, why?
2.Zun(creator) encourages fan works and interpretations so do many other games creators and mangakas but yet they're still not as popular, why?
3. Undertale is great game but calling it the next touhou is kinda reaching give it time.
4. Touhou has a huge cast of characters with flexible stories wrong...Touhou has a huge cast of characters who all have shitty half-assed backstories mixed in with traditional folklore...again, half-assed.
5. Touhou is no longer just a game it's a culture why the fuck does a shitty game like touhou have such a big culture?, and why is there a culture about it at all?...its seriously not worth it.
6. It's cute (well now it is) yeah yeah ass and titties right?...nearly every anime and manga out there has, at the very least, a bit of fanservice in their respective shows at some point...in other words this isn't even a proper reason.
7. Music there are tons of games series & anime shows out there that have amazing soundtracks and themes, most of which are better then any of these 90's j-pop theme songs touhou has...and the remixes don't make them any better...so therefore, again, this is not even a proper reason.
those who accuse others of being a troll, are the troll...and right now your really doing a good job at proving my point...but I know the people here will side with you becouse I'm in the minority when it comes to those who agree with me and those who don't.

but touhou isn't the only game that has this sort of thing going on...there are other games that have this set up but somehow touhou has become insanely popular from it...touhou has been put under the spotlight...and it just doesn't make sense to me.

i can only think of is that because the fans of touhou is good at making their own unique story using the characters presented that it is almost like it's canon to the story(since there isn't much story to begin with).. they are good at attracting people to touhou..

so what your saying is that the fanbase of touhou is feeding off of itself in order to become bigger?...that's....just not right...I don't like that...I mean in that case...that just defeats the point of there being a game of it in the first place...becouse if the main attraction of the series is the fanbase then what's the point in there being a series at all?...becouse in that case its no longer a series its just...a fanbase...and the series is just a small ice cube on top of a massive iceberg...its bullshit.
also the funny thing is, is the fact that those who create doujinshi of touhou could also create doujins of say street fighter or assassins creed or halo or metal gear solid but yet they don't...why?...touhou is yet again put under the spotlight within this compartment as well...wtf -_-

yup pretty much.. the fans themselves pretty much are the ones making it live.. as for the game, yeah its more or less just like any other bullet hell games out there.. and like i said, the point of the game is like only to introduce other characters for the fans to feed of to.. and well most of the doujinshi is for.. umm.. purpose other than an original good story.. and i think why there is so many fan arts/doujinshi of it is probably because almost all of the characters are girls(because if i remember correctly only 3~4 canon characters are male) w/c can be interpreted as moe that clicks well to otaku fan base..
It's like in marketing this game is the perfect product for the demand of otakus..

fuck that...fuck all of that, with 3000 dildos, 2000 bananas, 1000 gherkins, 500 cucumbers, and 100 black dildos...that's not how a game should become popular...its defeating the purpose of the game...its bullshit...I'm calling it..that's a load of bull...its cringe worthy...like as if something stinks, that kind of cringe...its like god has taken the world's worst diarrhea shit onto the earth...like there's doodoo all over the place...its raining doodoo right now...its raaaining doodoo...hallelujaaah its raaaaining doodoo...oh lord -_-...its not good...I don't like it.

bull to the shit...poo, poop, poopy...but seriously the fanbase is so cringe worthy...just hearing them argue over which headcanon is better is freaking cancer inducing -_-

i hear ya on that.. most of the fans are just too extreme like they have a secret cult or something..
exactly!...its freaking stupid...you know what?...here's another question...how can a fanbase that is so cringe worthy attract more fans?
ahh.. that is quite obvious my friend.. they might be like that but they are quite good with their works w/c is quite entertaining for and interesting enough to attract new people on the series...

haha jokes aside(pls. don't hate me for that), i think it isn't all that bad because people can actually show their creativity through this games characters..

yeah there's a clear difference between those within the fanbase who are creative, and those who are just cringe worthy...and there's a lot more cringe inducement then there is creativity within this fanbase.

and that concludes our discussion of why touhou has a massive fanbase, good bye man.
